Still not at all comfortable with applying generalist derogatory names to large chunks of the population for any reason. The truth is that the targets are largely poorer than average and are largely from more deprived areas - *even* if it is now ubiquitous to assert that the term applies solely to behaviour and not the more obvious common social determinants.
Dividing people in society and labeling them is unpleasant, even if you believe you are doing so on acceptable lines. The next person just follows suit and will have a different agenda.
'Chav' remains a divisive, pejorative term that stems from a negative British obession with class, and inevitably encourages social separation and conflict. Name calling is rarely a good thing, and has historically led to much worse things.
Just another opinion.
